Irradiation as a Quarantine Treatment

USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is conducting research on the effectiveness of irradiation as a quarantine treatment.  Research has shown that irradiation is effective in eliminating the threat of many quarantine pests on certain fruits and vegetables.  Members of CCQC’s and CRB’s board of directors and University of California research scientists met with APHIS’s Michon Oubichon and Chapman University’s Anuradha Prakash on Oct. 27, 2010 in Visalia, CA to discuss the possibility of conducting research to determine the effectiveness of irradiation in controlling important quarantine pests and its effect on citrus quality.
